What is stumpwork embroidery? Stumpwork or otherwise known as raised work is a highly skilled form of 3D hand embroidery, which gives a raised multi dimensional look. Stumpwork, with a cross over into hand embroidery stitches, allows you to create detailed 3D pieces and embellishments. It may be best to have some knowledge of hand embroidery before starting out with stumpwork. The “Learn Hand Embroidery Course” from the School of Stitched Textiles is an ideal course to undertake before embarking on this stumpwork course.
A really easy and quick introduction to this beautiful 3D embroidery technique will be conducted by embroidery instructor, Karen Quickfall. Karen will take you step by step through the creation of a gorgeous rose and caterpillar design.
Karen completed her City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Embroidery with SST a number of years ago. Karen has since specialised in Stumpwork, Needle Lace and Ruskin Lace – a type of embroidered lace crossing Needle Lace and Counted Thread work – indigenous to the Lake District in the north of England. Karen loves the outdoors and actively takes part in various outdoor UK events.
The course starts now and there is no end date. It is a self-paced course and therefore you decide when you start and finish the course.

If you’re not a complete beginner at stumpwork and would like to enrol in a course which is more advanced, then you can choose to undertake a City & Guilds accredited stumpwork course with Karen or another City & Guilds of London accredited textile course in a different subject with SST. All course subjects and levels can be reviewed at the bottom of this page. If you need any assistance in deciding the course and level that is right for you, please feel free to ask.
